Saskatchewan Rules of the Road Test
Right-of-way, speed limits, impaired driving (zero BAC for Class 7 and Novice drivers), passing, parking, highways, winter driving, sharing the road. Around 350 questions in the pool — 30 random questions per attempt from the rules-of-the-road bank.
What's in the rules bank
Every attempt pulls 30 random questions from the rules pool. The pool is split across the chapters that make up the rules half of the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook — right-of-way at uncontrolled, two-way, four-way, and T intersections; speed limits and reductions for school and playground zones; impaired and distracted driving law; following distance and emergency braking; passing and being passed; parking (where you can, where you can't, and where you get towed); highway merging, lane choice, and exits; sharing the road with pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, buses, trucks, and emergency vehicles; and winter driving.
- ~350 questions in the pool, 30 pulled per attempt
- Right-of-way — uncontrolled, 2-way stop, 4-way stop, yield, T intersections, roundabouts
- Speed and zones — 50 default urban, 100 provincial highway, school 30 on school days, playground as posted
- Impaired & distracted — zero BAC for Class 7/Novice, 0.04 provincial threshold, 0.08 criminal, hand-held ban
- Passing, parking, highways — passing on hills, prohibited zones, no-stopping, highway merge, zipper merge
- Winter driving — snow tires strongly recommended, braking distances, whiteouts, black ice
- Sharing the road — cyclists, pedestrians, trucks, buses, emergency vehicles, slow-down-move-over
- Insurance basics — plate-based coverage through the SGI Auto Fund, hit-and-run, reporting threshold
Saskatchewan-specific rules to nail
A handful of SK rules are tested heavily and get missed by learners who studied with out-of-province materials:
- Zero BAC during Class 7 and Novice — 0.00 blood alcohol at all times. Any detectable alcohol triggers a roadside suspension and a GDL violation.
- Supervisor must be 18+ with a Class 5 non-GDL — the supervisor rule is stricter than you'd guess. A sibling with a brand-new novice licence does not qualify.
- Midnight–5 a.m. passenger rule — Class 7 learners may carry only immediate family in that window.
- Doubled fines in school and work zones — both apply when workers or children are present.
- Plate-based insurance — basic liability and injury coverage are purchased with the plate through the SGI Auto Fund.
- New residents have 90 days — exchange your out-of-province licence at an SGI issuer within 90 days.
- Collision reporting threshold — collisions with injury or above-threshold damage must be reported immediately; the dollar amount is set by SGI.
How to use this drill
Run it after a failed or close-call mock on the rules side. The rules pool is big, so one drill session won't carpet it — plan two or three sessions spread across a few days. Spaced retrieval beats a single marathon.
When you can hit 27/30 or better on two consecutive attempts here and on the rules half of the 40-question mock, you're in good shape.
Sample questions
Five sample questions from the Saskatchewan Class 7 rules-of-the-road section. Click a question to reveal the correct answer and the handbook reference.
Q1. At a four-way stop where two vehicles arrive at the same time, which driver has the right-of-way?
- A. The driver on the right ← correct
- B. The driver on the left
- C. The larger vehicle
- D. The driver who signals first
Why: At a four-way stop, when two drivers arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the right has the right-of-way. See the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook — Chapter 6 (Rules of the road).
Q2. A three-point turn should only be used when:
- A. The road is narrow and no safer method is available ← correct
- B. You are in heavy traffic
- C. On a highway
- D. The road is wide and busy
Why: Use a three-point turn only on quiet, narrow roads with clear visibility in both directions. See the handbook — Chapter 6 (Turning).
Q3. Hydroplaning is most likely when:
- A. Driving slowly in rain
- B. Speed is too high for the depth of water on the pavement ← correct
- C. Using winter tires
- D. The road is dry
Why: Hydroplaning happens when speed is too high for the water on the road. Slow down in rain to prevent it. See the handbook — Chapter 11 (Driving in bad weather).
Q4. Fines for speeding in a Saskatchewan work zone with workers present are:
- A. The same as regular
- B. Doubled ← correct
- C. Halved
- D. Waived for first offenders
Why: Fines are doubled for speeding in a construction zone where workers are present. See the handbook — Chapter 6 (Construction zones).
Q5. When a pedestrian is in a marked crosswalk, drivers must:
- A. Stop and yield ← correct
- B. Sound the horn
- C. Drive around them
- D. Maintain speed
Why: Drivers must stop and yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks. See the handbook — Chapter 6 (Pedestrians).
Common questions
What is the blood alcohol limit for Class 7 drivers in SK?
Zero. 0.00 at all times. Any detectable alcohol is an immediate roadside suspension and a GDL violation. The regular 0.04 provincial and 0.08 criminal thresholds only apply to fully-licensed Class 5 drivers.
How are collisions reported in Saskatchewan?
Any collision causing injury or damage above the SGI-set threshold must be reported immediately to police and to SGI. Minor collisions below the threshold still need an exchange of information between drivers and a claim with SGI if either side wants to use their coverage.
Can Class 7 drivers use hands-free electronics?
Hand-held devices are banned for all SK drivers. Class 7 learners face additional electronic-device restrictions during the learner stage. Build the habit of never touching the phone while driving — the test wording assumes you won't.
How many rules questions are on the real SGI test?
20 of the 40 questions are on rules of the road. You need 16 correct (80%) on this section independently of the signs section.
