Manitoba GDL & General Knowledge Test
Three stages (5L, 5I, 5F), two time minimums (9 months, 15 months), one blood-alcohol limit (0.00) — and almost every MPI knowledge test asks about them. This drill pulls the GDL and general-knowledge questions out of the 500-question Manitoba bank for a focused study session.
Why GDL rules trip people up
Signs and basic right-of-way come naturally. GDL rules don't — they're a set of specific numbers (ages, months, BAC) and specific definitions (who counts as a supervising driver, what counts as a hand-held device) that only matter until you reach Class 5F. Learners skim them, then lose two or three marks on test day. The GDL drill is the fix.
- Class 5L — Learner — min 9 months. Zero BAC, supervisor required, no hand-held devices, no driving alone.
- Class 5I — Intermediate — min 15 months after the road test. Zero BAC continues. Six-month post-test window carries extra passenger and night-driving limits.
- Class 5F — Full — standard adult rules apply once the 5I period is complete.
- Driver Z — Manitoba high-school driver-education program; completing it lets eligible students start the 5L at 15½ instead of 16.
- Parental consent — required for the Class 5L application under age 18.
Class 5L (Learner) rules in detail
Class 5L is held for a minimum of nine months. During that time:
- Zero BAC and zero drugs — 0.00 blood alcohol with no exceptions.
- Supervising driver required at all times — a fully licensed Class 5 non-GDL driver who is at least 18 years old, holds a valid licence for at least three years, sits in the front passenger seat, and is sober (under 0.05 BAC).
- No hand-held electronics — the Manitoba hand-held ban applies at every stage, including 5L.
- No alcohol in the vehicle — even sealed, open-container rules are stricter than for Class 5F.
- Nine-month minimum — the clock cannot be shortened. Even with extra lessons, you cannot test for Class 5I before nine months.
Class 5I (Intermediate) rules in detail
Class 5I is held for a minimum of 15 months. During that time:
- Zero BAC continues — 0.00 BAC through all 15 months.
- Full driving privileges day-to-day — you can drive alone, without a supervisor.
- Night-time passenger limits — between midnight and 5 a.m., you may carry only one passenger unless a qualified supervising driver is in the front seat with you. This applies for the full 15 months of the 5I stage.
- No hand-held electronics — the ban continues.
- Supervising someone else — you cannot supervise a Class 5L learner during the 5I stage; only Class 5F non-GDL drivers 18+ qualify.
Driver Z and parental consent
Manitoba offers one of the Canadian provinces' most structured in-school driver-education systems. Driver Z runs through many Manitoba high schools and includes classroom instruction, in-car practice, and testing. Students who complete Driver Z can apply for a Class 5L at 15½ instead of the regular minimum age of 16.
Under age 18, every Class 5L application requires a parent or guardian consent form signed in person at the MPI service centre. Payment of the $10 knowledge-test fee and the $20 licence-issue fee happens the same day.
How to use this drill
Run the GDL drill twice a week in the lead-up to your test, treating it like reviewing a short checklist. By test day you should be able to answer any of the following without hesitation:
- What is the minimum age for a Class 5L without Driver Z? (16)
- What is the minimum age with Driver Z? (15½)
- What is the minimum 5L hold? (9 months)
- What is the minimum 5I hold? (15 months)
- What BAC applies at 5L and 5I? (0.00)
- Who qualifies as a supervising driver? (Class 5 non-GDL, 18+, 3 years licensed, in the front passenger seat, under 0.05 BAC)
- What is the hand-held device rule? (No use at any GDL stage)
- Which stage must you complete before 5F? (5I, for 15 months)
Common questions
How long is the Class 5L stage in Manitoba?
Minimum nine months before you can take the Class 5 road test. The calendar runs regardless of extra lessons.
How long is the Class 5I stage in Manitoba?
Minimum 15 months after passing the road test. Full Class 5F follows when the 15 months are complete and no suspensions or disqualifications have occurred.
What is the Driver Z program?
Driver Z is Manitoba's high-school driver-education program, offered through many Manitoba high schools. Completing Driver Z lets eligible students apply for a Class 5L at 15½ instead of 16.
Does the BAC change at Class 5F?
Yes. Once you reach Class 5F the standard Highway Traffic Act BAC rules apply (criminal threshold 0.08, provincial administrative-suspension threshold 0.05). Through 5L and 5I it is zero.
