Alberta GDL Rules: Class 7 Restrictions Explained
Every new driver in Alberta starts inside the Graduated Driver Licensing program. Here is what that actually means day to day — when you can drive, who can sit beside you, how demerit points work while you are a novice, and what it takes to get out.
What the GDL program is
Graduated Driver Licensing is Alberta's way of easing new drivers into full driving privileges instead of handing them over all at once. You earn independence in stages: first a Class 7 learner licence, then a probationary Class 5-GDL licence after you pass your first road test, and finally a full Class 5 once you have served your time and cleared the exit requirements. Each stage removes a restriction or two, and each stage watches your driving record more closely than the one before it.
The Class 7 learner stage is the most restricted. You cannot drive alone — a fully licensed driver has to be with you in the front passenger seat — and you cannot drive at night. Specifically, a Class 7 learner cannot drive between midnight and 5:00 A.M. That window catches a lot of people off guard, because it is narrower than the “no driving after dark” rule people assume. Passenger count matters too: under GDL, carrying more passengers than the vehicle has working seat belts earns you 2 demerit points, so every person in the car needs a functioning belt of their own.
Demerit points hit novice drivers harder
This is the part most learners misunderstand. Alberta runs one demerit point system, but it does not treat everyone on it identically. A fully licensed driver faces suspension upon accumulating 15 demerit points. Drivers still inside GDL are held to a lower threshold than that — the same handful of tickets that a fully licensed driver would absorb can cost a novice their licence. Because the exact novice threshold and the suspension lengths attached to it can change, confirm the current numbers on the Alberta Class 5 and GDL page ↗ rather than trusting a number you read on a forum.
GDL drivers are also subject to a zero blood-alcohol requirement. There is no small allowance, no “one drink is fine” margin — while you are in the program, any measurable alcohol behind the wheel puts your licence at risk. Treat it as an absolute.
Getting from Class 7 to Class 5
Passing your first road test moves you out of the learner stage and into a probationary Class 5-GDL licence. You must serve a minimum of 2 years in that probationary stage. During those two years the night-driving restriction is gone, but the zero-alcohol rule and the tighter demerit threshold follow you. To leave GDL entirely you need to pass a further road test and meet the driving-record conditions Alberta sets — check alberta.ca's licence page ↗ for the current requirements and fees before you book anything.
The knowledge test that starts all of this is written, multiple choice, and taken at a registry agent. Our study guides walk through the material section by section, and the registry directory lists where you can sit the test.
6 real GDL & demerit questions
These come straight from the question bank, with the correct answer marked and the reasoning underneath.
Question 1
A fully licenced driver is suspended when they accumulate:
- 15 demerit points
- 8 demerit points
- 5 demerit points
- 12 demerit points
Why: A fully licensed driver faces suspension upon accumulating 15 demerit points.
Question 2
Can a parent withdraw previously given parental consent for a licence held by someone under 18?
- Yes, if the driver is under 18 and not married or self-supporting
- Yes, but only after the driver completes another road test
- No, the consent is binding until the driver turns 18
- No, unless the driver has been suspended in the past year
Why: A parent can withdraw consent as long as the person is still under 18 and not self-supporting or married.
Question 3
Under GDL, a driver will receive 2 demerit points for which of the following?
- Carrying more passengers than the vehicle has working seat belts
- Driving the family vehicle without a parent in the front seat
- Permitting any passenger over 16 to ride without a seat belt
- Failing to display the GDL marker on the rear of the vehicle
Why: Under GDL, carrying more passengers than available seat belts results in 2 demerit points.
Question 4
Minimum time as a probationary Class 5-GDL driver:
- 6 months
- 18 months
- 2 years
- 1 year
Why: A probationary Class 5-GDL driver must serve a minimum of 2 years.
Question 5
A Class 7 learner cannot drive between:
- 9 AM and 5 PM
- Midnight and 5 AM
- 10 PM and 6 AM
- Midnight and 7 AM
Why: Class 7 learners cannot drive between midnight and 5:00 A.M.
Question 6

Practice GDL questionsCommon questions about Alberta GDL
How long am I in Alberta's GDL program?
The probationary Class 5-GDL stage lasts a minimum of 2 years. Before that you hold a Class 7 learner licence, which you must hold for a minimum period before taking your first road test — check the current minimum holding period at alberta.ca ↗.
Can I drive at night on an Alberta Class 7 learner licence?
No. A Class 7 learner cannot drive between midnight and 5:00 A.M.
How many demerit points suspend a driver in Alberta?
A fully licensed driver faces suspension upon accumulating 15 demerit points. Novice drivers in the GDL program are held to a lower threshold. Confirm the current novice threshold at alberta.ca ↗ before relying on a specific number.
How many passengers can a Class 7 learner carry?
Under GDL, carrying more passengers than the vehicle has working seat belts results in 2 demerit points — so the practical limit is one passenger per working seat belt.
What is the zero-alcohol rule for GDL drivers?
Drivers in the GDL program are subject to a zero blood-alcohol requirement. Unlike a fully licensed driver, you have no allowance at all — any measurable alcohol while driving puts your licence at risk.
When can I move from Class 7 to a full Class 5 licence?
After passing your first road test you become a probationary Class 5-GDL driver and must serve a minimum of 2 years in that stage. To exit GDL you also need to pass a further road test and meet the driving-record conditions set out at alberta.ca ↗.
