Manitoba MPI Knowledge Test Guide 2026 — How to Pass
Last updated:
The MPI Class 5 knowledge test is 30 multiple-choice questions with a 30-minute time limit. You need 24 out of 30 correct to pass. Fees are $10 for the test and $20 for the licence when you pass. Minimum age is 16 (or 15½ with Driver Z). Pass, and you leave the MPI service centre with a Class 5L learner's licence and the first stage of Manitoba's three-stage Graduated Driver Licensing program.
What the MPI knowledge test actually is
In Manitoba, every new driver starts with a Class 5L learner's licence. To get it you must pass a written knowledge test at a Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) service centre. The test confirms you understand the material in the Manitoba Driver's Handbook, which MPI publishes and updates. MPI is one of three Canadian provincial crown corporations that handle both driver licensing and the basic liability insurance (Autopac).
The test is 30 multiple-choice questions covering road signs, rules of the road, impaired driving, winter driving, GDL rules, and Autopac basics. You get 30 minutes to work through it; most learners finish inside 20.
Format, scoring, and the pass mark
You need 24 out of 30 overall to pass — 80 percent. There are no section-level pass thresholds the way Saskatchewan or Ontario use; Manitoba scores on a single overall count. Miss seven and you've failed, regardless of which categories they came from. The 30-minute clock is enforced; running out of time ends the test wherever you are. This is one of the few provincial tests where pacing matters.
The test is available in 30 languages, including French, Cree, Low German, Mandarin, Tagalog, Punjabi, and Spanish — the broadest language support of any Canadian province. Choose your language when you arrive at the service centre; the screens and audio will match.
Who can take it
The minimum age for a Class 5L learner's licence in Manitoba is 16, or 15½ if you have completed the Driver Z high-school driver-education program. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign your application in person at the service centre; a notarised consent form submitted separately is not accepted.
Visitors from another Canadian province can drive on their valid home licence while they're in Manitoba. New Manitoba residents have three months to exchange their out-of-province licence through MPI.
Where to take the test
The knowledge test is given at MPI service centres. There are around 10 across Manitoba, with the largest in Winnipeg and others in Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Dauphin, Thompson, Flin Flon, Steinbach, and Selkirk. Smaller rural service centres handle fewer appointment types; call ahead to confirm the knowledge test is offered on the day you want. In Winnipeg and Brandon you can usually book online or walk in; smaller centres may require an appointment. The MPI website at mpi.mb.ca has the full list of locations and current hours.
What to bring
You need to prove who you are. MPI uses a primary-plus-secondary ID system:
- Primary — Canadian passport, Canadian birth certificate (long form), Permanent Resident card, Canadian citizenship certificate, or Secure Certificate of Indian Status.
- Secondary — a document showing your name and either signature or photo. Student card, bank card with signature, provincial health card, Social Insurance Number card (as supporting document only), employee ID, or valid Canadian passport (if not used as primary).
- Under 18 — a parent or guardian must come with you and sign the consent form in person.
- Payment — debit, credit, or cash. The $10 knowledge-test fee is paid up front; if you pass, you pay a further $20 for the licence issue and up to $45 for the base Autopac driver premium.
- Vision correction — wear glasses or contacts if you need them. The vision screen uses a wall chart and is pass/fail. Failing the vision test blocks the knowledge test for that day.
Cost
Fees are set by MPI and reviewed from time to time. In 2026 the headline costs are:
- $10 — knowledge-test fee, per attempt. Rewrites cost the same each time.
- $20 — Class 5L licence issue fee, paid once when you pass.
- Up to $45 — base Autopac driver premium, adjusted by the Driver Safety Rating.
Add it up and your out-the-door cost on a passing day is around $75. Payment methods accepted at MPI service centres include debit, credit, and cash. Check the current rate on the MPI website before you go; fees do change.
Retake policy
There is no mandatory waiting period if you fail. MPI generally lets you retest the next business day after paying the $10 test fee again. The service centre's own availability is the real limit; busy Winnipeg locations may book out a day or two. If you fail multiple times, the staff may suggest spending more time with the handbook and a practice test before coming back. That's a recommendation, not a legal cooling-off period.
How to prepare in a week
Most learners pass with about a week of focused study. The structure that works:
- Read the Manitoba Driver's Handbook front to back once. Do not try to memorise; just absorb.
- Spend one evening on each major topic: signs, rules, GDL, impaired driving, winter driving, Autopac.
- Run practice tests daily. Score yourself and note which topic you lose points on.
- Drill the signs and rules questions separately for a day each.
- Finish with a timed 30-question mock exam under the 30-minute clock. Aim for 27 or better before you book the real test.
For GDL rules in particular, our GDL program explained post walks through all three stages.
After you pass
You leave the service centre with a temporary paper Class 5L licence valid until your plastic card arrives in the mail (typically 2–3 weeks). From that moment you must drive with a qualified supervisor in the front passenger seat — a non-GDL Class 5 driver who is at least 18, has held the full licence for at least three years, and is sober (under 0.05 BAC). You must hold the Class 5L for a minimum of 9 months before you can take the road test for Class 5I. During those nine months the Class 5L restrictions apply: 0.00 BAC, no hand-held devices, no driving alone.
Day-of-test tips
- Arrive 15 minutes early. Rushing through parking or security kills your focus.
- Eat something. A hungry brain misreads questions.
- Read every question twice before looking at the answers. Half of all wrong picks are reading errors.
- If a question is unfamiliar, flag it and come back. Spending four minutes on one question costs you the clock.
- Pick your language at the start screen. If English is not your first language, choose the version you read in daily, not the one you want to practice.
